Every year, a few days before the annual glamorous Flower Festival, the Regional Secretary of Tourism and transportation, hosts a prize giving ceremony for the Production farm Winners of the the best quality of flower & plants at the Flower Festival competition of the previous year.
This year it was held on April 15 th awarding FLORIALIS, a Palheiro Estate affiliate and the leading flower production farm on the Island, with the following prizes :
– 1st, 2nd & 3rd Prize for best Cymbidium Orchid cut-flowers.
– 1st, 2nd & 3rd Prize for best Cymbidium Orchid plants.
– 1st, 2nd & 3rd Prize for best Protea flowers
– 1st Prize for best Warratah Telopea flower (Protea Similar)
– 1st and 3rd Prize for best Leucospermum flower / Pincushions (Protea Similar).
This Year, FLORIALIS has yet again dazzled the public & jury winning an equal number of prizes!
Madeira Story Centre celebrates its 4th anniversary on the 29th April of 2009
The Blandy Group company, emerged in 2005 to fill in a need in the market of Funchal for an information center on the History and culture of Madeira Island, is now celebrating its 4th anniversary.
Already fully consolidated, the Madeira Story Center receives an average of 130,000 visitors per year with a degree of satisfaction of its visitors of around 95%. The areas of greatest success are the permanent exhibition center and shop.
The vast majority of visitors to the exhibition are tourists who want to know a bit more of the archipelago’s History. Regarding the shop, it is praised for the good selection of regional articles and gifts, and is very much visited by tourists and residents alike.
To mark the date, changes have been made in the exhibition center, with special emphasis on the “Volcanic Beginnings” area information on the endemic fauna and flora and fauna of the region was added. These changes are intended to enrich the contents of the Story Centre, providing more complete information to its visitors.
Please note that the Madeira Story Centre is open every day of the week, between 10.00 and 19.00, closing only on December 25th.

One of the most colourful traditional events organised in Madeira, the Flower Festival sees many activities and celebrations take place around the capital of Funchal.
Flower displays, parades and the construction of a ‘Wall of Hope’ in the Municipal Square ‘Praça do Município’ bring extra colour to the capital.
Exotic and flowering plants from all around the world can also be seen at the Palheiro Gardens including more than 600 varieties of camellias dating back to 1810, recognised as one of the most historic collections of camellias in the world.
The Palheiro Estate gardens were established in 1801 by João Esmeraldo, the first Count of Carvalhal, and have been cultivated since then by the Blandy family for five generations.
The Blandy’s have developed Palheiro Village, a collection of 79 villas and apartments set in their own landscaped gardens.
Located on the naturally tiered southern side of the Palheiro Estate, owners have access to the estate’s facilities including the Palheiro Gardens as well as the 18-hole Palheiro Golf Course and Village Forum with a pool, pool bar and reception.

O Palheiro Golfe foi palco no passado domingo de mais uma prova do calendário anual do clube, desta feita uma prova destinada a equipas.
Denominado por ‘Torneio Texas Scramble’, o evento contou com a presença de 10 equipas, num total de 30 jogadores, que lutaram pelo primeiro título colectivo de 2009.
Formando equipas com três jogadores a competição, que foi disputada na modalidade de Stroke Play Net, voltou a ter momentos de grande emoção, principalmente no que diz respeito à luta pelo título.
Assim sendo e em termos de resultados Jonathan Fletcher; Philipe Moreau e Peter Booth viriam a ser os golfistas mais regulares averbando uma pontuação de 59 pontos net que seriam suficientes para conquistarem o título. Contudo os ‘campeões’ tiveram que se aplicar a fundo já que o ‘trio’ composto por Michael Cuckney, Fernanda Cuckney e Nidip Handa, rubricaram uma excelente volta tendo apenas perdido a vitória por dois pontos (61 pontos net).
O Palheiro Golfe volta este fim-de-semana a acolher novo torneio, desta feita o Torneio Medal, com as inscrições a estarem abertas até esta sexta-feira.
Jane Slade wrote a positive feature entitled “Mad about Madeira” that featured in yesterday’s Sunday Express. She visited the island last year, and obviously enjoyed her time on Madeira as she states that the “island’s old-fashioned charm and faded elegance is enjoying a resurgence among young families looking for an easy home.”
Some of the reasons for this appeal are given as the “year-round sunshine, botanical gardens and a faded colonial-style ambience.” Improved roads, new golf courses and hip hotels opening are also remarked upon…plus of course the fortified wine!
Palheiro Village gets a good review, with a current owner quoted on how the island has grown on her the more time she’s spent there. Development manager Roger Still is quoted on why Palheiro appeals, which he notes as the well-established golf course, boutique hotel, onsite restaurant and soon-to-open spa.
Palheiro Golf Course is featured in the April edition of the popular golfing magazine Golf International, written by Peter Swain. He opens by stating: “The old school charm of the 19th century Blandy Estate has been wowing walkers, drinkers and golfers for some time.”
Palheiro Golf is noted as being “spectacular and challenging” and that the “semi-tropical gardens, a boutique hotel and a clubhouse with exquisite food add to the ambience.”
The 9th round of this beneficial golf tournament, supporting KRTEK – the Childhood Cancer Foundation, has taken place at the beautiful course of Karlstejn on Thursday, October 2nd, 2008.
The tournament was extremely successful this year and Krtek was able to raise an amazing amount of money. Nearly £ 27 000 will be in full sum used to cover the expenses of the special summer camp for children who have just finished their cancer treatment at the Pediatric Oncology Department of the University hospital, Brno, Czech Republic.
KRTEK, The Childhood Cancer Foundation, organizes these camps in order to help small patients with their return to everyday life. The summer camp 2008 enabled 116 kids (aged 4 to 15) to spend their holidays the same way as their healthy friends, despite the very tough circumstances.
Therefore we are so very grateful to Palheiro Estate team for supporting us by donating the one-week luxury holiday voucher for 2 at Casa Velha do Palheiro. This way KRTEK can express its gratitude to all the donors and sponsors. We are especially pleased this year, because this beautiful treat has been won by Ivana Chvátalová and her husband. Not only Ivana is the MC of the tournament (for free, of course), but helps very much through the whole year and on top of that, together with her husband, she also regularly buys one flight to support our foundation.
The competition, as always, was amongst the teams, not individuals. First place was taken by the flight of MaMaison Hotels and Residences and the 2nd best place belongs to the team of Palheiro Estate (players Matthew Stillman, Joel Einhorn, Jimmy Lilja and Jason Dupuy). The 3rd place belongs to the team of CEZ.
Foram cerca de 60 os jovens que no passado sábado estrearam-se naquela que é uma das grandes aposta do golfe regional para este ano, nomeadamente a criação de um Circuito Júnior da modalidade.
Com o primeiro torneio, denominado por ‘Torneio Ben Hogan’, a ter lugar no campo de Golfe do Santo da Serra, o grande destaque da etapa foi para a adesão em massa não só dos jovens jogadores mas também de pais e familiares que quiseram assistir às primeiras tacadas dos seus filhos.
Na competição de 18 buracos, Manuel João Sousa mostrou estar em grande forma e conseguiu o triunfo com 78 pancadas, menos uma que Robert Jesus. Na prova de nove buracos, jogada no percurso Serras, destaque para o jovem de 9 anos, Carlos Laranja, que conseguiu bater Bernardo Costa Silva e Declan Hobley .
No torneio de três buracos, o vencedor foi Diogo Fernandes, ao terminar com 14 pancadas, menos uma que o jovem de 7 anos, Pedro Afonso Teixeira e Catarina Spínola. Finalmente, na competição destinada aos principiantes, o torneio ‘chip e putt’, a vencedora foi Natacha Sofia, que, graças ao seu espectacular ‘chip in’ no último buraco, bateu os restantes adversários, Maria Tomás, António Dantas, Erika Szabo e Constança Gouveia. O próximo torneio ‘Walter Hagen’ disputa-se a 10 de Maio, no Palheiro Golfe.
Recipe March 2009
For this first recipe I decided, as we are approaching spring, to talk about citruses and green asparagus. The asparagus season has arrived and for me it is a vegetable of great value because it marries well with many ingredients such as: wild mushrooms, white meat, fish, shellfish, eggs etc… This time I chose to combine the asparagus with a fantastic product: lobster from coastal shores.
I decided to make this recipe, because it is a salad that is extremely popular in the restaurant. The clients who visit our island, find in this dish what they are looking for; colour, a light cuisine and the use of regional citrus fruits.
I wanted to make to make a citrus vinaigrette because Portugal produces great quality olive oil and it is our duty to demonstrate to our clients that Madeira is truly a gourmet destination. Many chefs from the island make daily efforts to offer both island and continental produce on their menus.

LOBSTER SALAD WITH MANGO CARPACCIO AND CITRUS VINAIGRETTE
Ingredients (for 1 portion)
150gr cooked lobster tail
80gr thinly sliced fresh mango
25gr melon balls
15gr smoked duck breast
20gr mixed salad leaves
10ml olive oil
20gr orange segments
20gr lemon segments
20gr grapefruit segments
5ml orange juice
3ml balsamic vinegar
4gr shredded basil
5gr orange zest
5gr lemon zest
Put the lobster to cook in boiling water for 8 minutes. Let it cool then shell. Peel the mango and thinly slice.
Boil the orange and lemon zest separately in boiling water 3 times (to eliminate the sour taste).
Prepare the vinaigrette with all the necessary ingredients.
Cut the lobster tail into medallions and then cut the smoked duck breast into lozenge shapes.
Make the melon balls and plate as shown in the photograph.
