B.E.S. Kids Open – Palheiro Golf Tournament 3.9.2010

The closing tournament of the Summer Hols Golf activities programme was held at Palheiro Golf last Friday, 3rd September 2010. About 50 youngsters participated in BES Kids Open, which is sponsored by BES bank.

The activities started at 14.30h, after most of the participants lunched together in the Palheiro Clubhouse. First came the 6 hole competition, for more accomplished players, who tested their skills on the Palheiro Golf championship course. The Academy competition was next, for intermediate level players. The tournament ended with the little ones completing 5 holes on the putting green.

The competition was followed by a prize-winning tea, with lots of proud looking parents looking on. Winners were as follows: 6 holes: 1st place to Gonçalo Araújo, followed by Madalena Fernandes in 2nd and Leonel Pereira in 3rd. Academy Competition: 1st Oliver Gouveia, 2nd Matilde Fernandes and 3rd João Pedro Gonçalves. In the Putting Competition Joaquim Abreu came 1st, with Ana Teixeira a very close 2nd, with just one shot between them. A tie-breaker was necessary for the 3rd place, as three players scored the same points. João Reis Gomes won 3rd prize, thanks to the best score on the last hole.

The children’s natural exuberance made the event a fun affair, but the fact that there were some special medals this year made for some extra excitement. This year the Summer Hols Golf organization decided to award medals to athletes that stood out in other ways that are also important to golf – and everyday living too, in fact. Thus the Assiduity Prize was awarded to Daniela Matias, the Fidelity Prize to brothers Pedro and Nuno Camacho, the Good Behaviour Prize to Pedro Andrade, the Eagerness Prize to Guilherme Calção, the Sociability Prize to João França Ferreira, the Young Revelation Prize to Joaquim Gouveia and the Most Dapper Prize to Gustavo Gouveia.

Palheiro Golf would like to thank BES Bank for their support in training these youngsters by sponsoring the tournament for the 2nd consecutive year, Casa Velha do Palheiro Country House Hotel, for providing tea for all the athletes, and all the staff members whose effort helped make this programme happen, as well as all the parents and young golfers for their presence and participation.

Tuition in the Palheiro Golf Training Academy re-starts on October 2nd. Meanwhile, the Golf Skills Challenge is next Saturday 11th September and the pre-Season tournament is September 18th.
