Clínica Santa Catarina Partner

Bird Watching at Palheiro

On the 7th of November Palheiro estate will be hosting a bird watching excursion together with SPEA (Portuguese Ornithological Society) in an attempt to spot some of the rarer species to be found at Palheiro Estate.

There are more than 20 species of birds at Palheiro Estate, a fair share of those to be found on the island. We are also privileged to have two rare endemic species nesting at Palheiro (The Macaronesian Sparrowhawk and Trocaz Pigeon) and have recently been visited by several migratory birds such as the Red-footed Falcon (in pic) and Cuckoo.

Casa Velha Autumnal Menu

Casa Velha do Palheiro chefs Francisco Quintal and Eric Weidmann have just launched the new Autumnal menu.
Showcasing new mouthwatering dishes such as ‘Grilled scallops with curry oil, lentils salad, champagne vinaigrette’ or ‘sautéed foie gras escalope with brioche and red fruits’ as starters.

Main dishes include goodies such as ‘Autumn fish stew with lobster, chestnuts, mushrooms and seasonal vegetables.
New desserts include ‘chestnut delight with rum and vanilla’ with a recommendation to be accompanied by Blandy’s Malmsey 5 year old!


It’s Wahoo Time

From late summer into early winter, large wahoo prowl the inshore grounds in search of mackerel, needlefish, large flying fish and other baitfish. Madeiran wahoo are well- conditioned fish that normally average 40 to 60 lbs with occasional larger fish exceeding the 70-lb mark.

These sleek razor-jawed predators can be surprisingly elusive and wary, but when hooked up are turbocharged performers on light to medium tackle. Most of the productive wahoo marks lie close to the island’s remarkable cliffs, offering a spectacular view whilst you await the bite.
