Tony Jacklin visits Palheiro Golf Madeira

On the 13th April one of golf’s greatest players visited Palheiro Golf. Arriving on-board the MS Crystal Serenity, Tony Jacklin was accompanying a group of golfers from the Unites States.
Upon arriving at Palheiro he was full of praise about the course, the set up and the wonderful panoramic views which can be enjoyed from various points. Watching him tee off on the 1st hole Tony, at age 68, showed that he has still got it as his ball landed perfectly in the middle of the fairway. I did follow him for a few holes and it was a real pleasure watching him play, hitting shots that made the game look so easy, and bringing back memories of the good old days.
In 1969, he became the first British player to win The Open Championship for 18 years, winning by two strokes at Royal Lytham & St Annes. The following season he won his second major title, the U.S. Open by seven strokes. It was the only U.S. Open victory by a European player in an 84-year span (1926–2009). He also won eight events on the European Tour between its first season in 1972 and 1982, and his 1968 PGA Tour win at the Jacksonville Open Invitational was the first by a European player on the U.S. Tour since the 1920s; However, Jacklin may be best remembered for his involvement in the Ryder Cup. He was a playing member of the “Great Britain and Ireland” team in 1967, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1975 and 1977, and of the first European team in 1979.
He later served as the non-playing captain of Europe in four consecutive Ryder Cups from 1983 to 1989. He had a 2.5–1.5 won-loss record, captaining his men to their first victory for 28 years in 1985, and to their first ever victory in the United States in 1987. In 2002 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. He retired from tournament golf in 2004 at the age of sixty, having won a number of events at senior level.

Funchal, Madeira, February 8, 2013 – The grand prize winner of the Palheiro Estate 2012 Photo Competition is… Mr. Anders Blakstvedt of Norway! Congratulations! His fantastic entry of the sunset reflected in a large pool in one of our luxury villas was a clear favourite.

Mr. Blakstvedt stated that winning the competition was a very nice surprise and said about his photograph:

“A colourful mix of quietness and luxury – and a reflection of our stay in Palheiro Village”

Mr. Blakstvedt used a Canon EOS 650D and EF40mm f/2.8 STM lens to take this photo. The settings were: f/5.6, S 1/60 & ISO 125.

It was a difficult decision for this year’s jury, comprised of:

    ·        Jonathan Fletcher – Director of Palheiro Estate

    ·        Chris Szabo – Web design and social media marketing guru -http://www.navegabem.com/

    ·        Toby Majewski – Graphic / web designer and photography enthusiast

This year’s entries were of a high standard with some very creative compositions taking full advantage of the huge array of opportunities within the Estate.

“It was great to see so many photos of the Estate which we know so well, captured from such different and unique perspectives. It goes to show how a good camera, a keen eye and a bit of quality time spent in a beautiful place can produce some stunning images” – commented Toby.

We would like to congratulate Mr. Blakstvedt and look forward to welcoming him back to Palheiro Village to enjoy his prize.

Also very much deserving of an honourable mention are the runners-up – Jens Dembski  & Artur Gorcz (photographs below) whose submissions caused quite a discussion as to who should take the prize.

We’d also like to thank the everyone who submitted their photos in this year’s competition. It’s been our biggest one so far, and the quality of photography was great. We hope next year’s competition will be even better.

Please note that we will soon be launching the 2013 Photo Competition! So, plan your trip, keep your camera at the ready and we look forward to receiving your submissions.

    Golf on Madeira

With a permanent spring-like climate Madeira is the perfect holiday destination for golf lovers all year round.

Situated close to the famous gardens of Quinta do Palheiro, which date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century and are famous for their wide range of exotic flora, the Palheiro course offers fabulous views over Funchal bay, the sea and the Ilhas Desertas in the distance.

The par-72 course was designed by the architect Cabell Robinson, a former assistant of Robert Trent Jones, who had already done work in Portugal and took care to make the most of the hills, mountain peaks and deep valleys that are a typical feature of the Madeira landscape, in order to provide golfers with an exciting and competitive round.

At the Palheiro course, there are five par-3, nine par-4 and four par-5 holes, including the final hole which leads up to the beautiful clubhouse, built in the Madeira style and offering golfers the chance to relax and enjoy the unforgettable panoramic view over the city of Funchal.
