Bird Watching at Palheiro

On the 7th of November Palheiro estate will be hosting a bird watching excursion together with SPEA (Portuguese Ornithological Society) in an attempt to spot some of the rarer species to be found at Palheiro Estate.

There are more than 20 species of birds at Palheiro Estate, a fair share of those to be found on the island. We are also privileged to have two rare endemic species nesting at Palheiro (The Macaronesian Sparrowhawk and Trocaz Pigeon) and have recently been visited by several migratory birds such as the Red-footed Falcon (in pic) and Cuckoo.

    palheiro-golf

Set within the magnificent Palheiro Estate and lying adjacent to the five-star Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro – a Relais & Châteaux property – the 18-hole, par 72 Championship golf course meanders through a pristine environment of maritime pine and botanical woodland embroidered with lush, sub-tropical vegetation.

At nearly 500 m (1640 ft) above sea level, the location is blessed with dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Nestling below just 10 minutes away is Funchal, the island’s capital.

Designed by renowned golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, this picturesque layout with year-round appeal takes full advantage of Madeira’s hilly terrain, with abrupt ridges and deep valleys providing a compelling challenge for even the most seasoned golfer.

Teeing off here is to walk through a verdant and tranquil 200-year-old country estate, and an abundance of fragrant, exotic flora lends the course a unique and singular quality. Melodic birdsong enriches the experience.

Play calls for a fair degree of accuracy – the contoured fairways and strategically placed bunkers guarding fast, undulating greens mean there’s little room for error. A halfway house, The Tea House, offers refreshments and a chance to pause and assess scorecards.

Indeed, a round of golf at Palheiro engages all the senses and rewards those of all abilities with an enjoyable and memorable experience. And remember, Casa Velha hotel guests have privileged access to the course and its facilities.

The gardens at “Quinta do Palheiro” are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira.

Madeira has long been called the “Garden Isle” and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil.

In Funchal many tropical plants have found a home and the visitor can see Hibiscus and Bougainvillea in flower almost all the year round along with Jacaranda, Spathodeas, Erythrinas and Bauhinias in their season.

The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 meters above sea level. The original owner, the Conde de Carvalhal, planted many trees on the estate and laid the foundation to the Camellia collection; some of his early plantings can still be seen today.

The land first belonged to the Count of Carvalhal back in 1801. Here he built a hunting lodge with a carriage way entrance of 200 plane trees and imported exotic trees from all over the world. In 1885 the estate was purchased by John Blandy.
The family continued the development of the Gardens in the 1900s and it was Mildred Blandy who introduced many plants including proteas from South Africa. In 1997 the Counts’s house was renovated and converted to a hotel known as the Casa Velha do Palheiro, a Relais & Chateau member.

The Gardens have a privileged location above Funchal and are rich in colour and scent. Here you will find a magnificent collection of camellias started by the Count, centennial trees, the rose garden created by Christina Blandy and a myriad of other flowers and climbers.

This Eden is divided into several areas: The Main Garden, Sunken Garden, Ribeirodo Inferno, Rose Garden, Lady’s Garden and the Tea-House area where you may admire a Brazilian auracaria and a The land first belonged to the Count of Carvalhal back in 1801. GoldDustBunkers

Palheiro Golf is delighted to announce that Yudik Gold are now sponsoring Palheiro Golf’s bunkers.

Jonathan fletcher President of Palheiro Golf explains ‘Sand shots are notoriously difficult for the average golfer.  With our new gold dust in the bunkers we have found that the lighter texture of the particle translates into a simpler shot.  During the experimental phase many of our guests were amazed at the difference and how much easier bunker shots were. It is great to be the first resort course in the world making this change from sand to gold dust and we are sure that many top end resorts will follow.’
