The gardens at “Quinta do Palheiro” are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira.

Madeira has long been called the “Garden Isle” and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil.

In Funchal many tropical plants have found a home and the visitor can see Hibiscus and Bougainvillea in flower almost all the year round along with Jacaranda, Spathodeas, Erythrinas and Bauhinias in their season.

The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 meters above sea level. The original owner, the Conde de Carvalhal, planted many trees on the estate and laid the foundation to the Camellia collection; some of his early plantings can still be seen today.

The land first belonged to the Count of Carvalhal back in 1801. Here he built a hunting lodge with a carriage way entrance of 200 plane trees and imported exotic trees from all over the world. In 1885 the estate was purchased by John Blandy.
The family continued the development of the Gardens in the 1900s and it was Mildred Blandy who introduced many plants including proteas from South Africa. In 1997 the Counts’s house was renovated and converted to a hotel known as the Casa Velha do Palheiro, a Relais & Chateau member.

The Gardens have a privileged location above Funchal and are rich in colour and scent. Here you will find a magnificent collection of camellias started by the Count, centennial trees, the rose garden created by Christina Blandy and a myriad of other flowers and climbers.

EN: Madeira Flower Festival

Floral species originating in many parts of the world bloom in Madeira, as the island meets specific climatic conditions that allow species from both tropical and cold regions to flourish.

The Flower Festival is also a cultural event. Tradition is particularly associated with the event, whether through the performances of folk groups, or through the construction of the beautiful floral carpets. At the same time, homage is paid to flowers at the magnificent Flower Exhibition and the city is animated with music concerts and variety shows.

Now is the time to visit the Palheiro gardens and see the Camellias in full bloom.
The early Camellia Sasanqua start in October together with the famous Granthamiana from Hong Kong and finishes about now.
The Camellia Japonica, white, pink, red and striped flower from December through to end of April.  Single and double, a mass of beauty!  Also the huge pink and red blooms of the Camellia reticulata are showing.
From the gate house entrance along the drive, at the bottom of the main garden and in the Ribeira do Inferno you will see masses of plants; the walk continues to the Chapel, surrounded by more Camellias and then towards the huge Araucarias by Casa Velha hotel. Yes, they are everywhere.
You may notice there has been much pruning work going on in the Camellia Avenue, also along the west side of the main garden and along the drive (remnants of the fire in July 2012).
You will also see to the south of the entrance gate an extensive replanting program underway, using mainly Madeira indigenous and endemic species.
The Gardens are open every day between 09.00 – 17.30
Bus from Funchal that stops by the entrance gate, number 36A and 37.
