Madeira Flower Festival 2013
Madeira Flower Festival 2013 – 9th to15th May
Madeira Flower Festival, that takes place every year in the spring.
Children’s Parade (Wall of Hope Ceremony) – The magic of this event starts on Saturday morning, with the Children’s Parade, on which, hundreds of children dressed for the occasion dishallow to the Municipio Square where, a beautiful flower mural is built, symbolically named “the Wall of Hope” (Muro da Esperança).
On Sunday afternoon, the streets of downtown Funchal will be filled with music, colour and soft aromas, through the sumptuous parade comprised by several floats, which harmoniously combine numerous flower species with blooming decorations full of creativity.
Flower Festival History
The Flower Festival had its origins in the Rose Cotillion, which comprised an exhibition / competition of flowers that took place in 1954, at Ateneu Comercial do Funchal. The success of the happening was so huge, that, in the following years this event had a change of name to Flower Festival.

From 1979 onwards, with the purpose of adding value to the exhibition from Ateneu Comercial and give a new impetus to the regional tourism entertainment calendar, the Madeira Tourism Board begins to comprise in the festival calendar the other street manifestations, namely the wall of hope ceremony, the flower parade, the floral competitions – shop window and blooming gardens – and musical displays.
The island attracts thousands of people to events like the Festival of Flowers in the spring and the New Year’s Eve party with the largest fireworks show in the world.

With a permanent spring-like climate Madeira is the perfect holiday destination for golf lovers all year round.
Situated close to the famous gardens of Quinta do Palheiro, which date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century and are famous for their wide range of exotic flora, the Palheiro course offers fabulous views over Funchal bay, the sea and the Ilhas Desertas in the distance.
The par-72 course was designed by the architect Cabell Robinson, a former assistant of Robert Trent Jones, who had already done work in Portugal and took care to make the most of the hills, mountain peaks and deep valleys that are a typical feature of the Madeira landscape, in order to provide golfers with an exciting and competitive round.
At the Palheiro course, there are five par-3, nine par-4 and four par-5 holes, including the final hole which leads up to the beautiful clubhouse, built in the Madeira style and offering golfers the chance to relax and enjoy the unforgettable panoramic view over the city of Funchal.
Stay & Play in Madeira
Great packages available at 5 star Hotel Casa Velha and Palheiro Village self catering villas and apartments.
Madeira island a holiday with so much to offer!
Madeira Island is known as the Pearl of the Atlantic, the floating Garden. Madeira welcomes you…
As a frequent visitor I find that March, April and May are the most colourful times to visit the Palheiro gardens.
Camellias and sea of Arum lilies and Nasturtiums growing wild greet you along the entrance drive studded with Plane trees and old Oaks.
The orange pincushion Proteas and pink Judas trees are flowering in the Main garden whilst the bright red Captain Rawes reticulata Camellia signals the peak of another Camellia season . Rhododendrons, wild Freesias and mauve Moschosma mix with the rare Clematis grandiflora which is also in flower .
The spectacular red Telopeas from Western Australia are flowering above the Chapel and red Tritonias grow alongside the lowest pond below near the giant Auracarias.
White and blue Wisteria, Delphiniums, Californian poppies, Sweet Peas and a myriad of other annuals vie for attention in the Lower garden. Time also for the beautiful Cantua buxifolia with its red long trumpets and blue Echium candicans or Pride of Madeira below the lily ponds near the Tea house.
The Roses add a splash of colour in the walled Rose garden created several years ago though their main flowering time is yet to come.
