Palheiro Golf, Madeira Island celebrates 20 years.

In 2013 Palheiro Golf in Madeira Island will be celebrating its 20th year.

For this special year Palheiro Golf has put together a fun program for both visitors and members.

The program starts in April 2013 and comprises of:

Tournaments, Memorabilia, Special Packages and promotions.

Unique tournaments including playing the original layout as well as the Madeira Wine Tournament which has the support of the main Wine Producers on the Island.

As part of the promotions and Palheiro’s ‘grow the game’ philosophy, they will be offering ‘Twenty Free Memberships for 20 year olds’ as well as other unique prizes including a prize for the 20,000 player during the year.

With the help of collaborators over the last 20 years Palheiro golf has put together a collection of memorabilia.  Here you will find some fun photos including some of our more famous visitors including Prince Edward, Ronaldo and Sir Bobby Robson.

There will also be stay and play packages at our luxury hotel or at our stunning self-catering villas and apartments with views over the bay of Funchal.

Situated close to the famous gardens of Quinta do Palheiro, which date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century and are famous for their wide range of exotic flora, the Palheiro course offers fabulous views over Funchal bay, the sea and the Ilhas Desertas in the distance.

The par-72 course was designed by the architect Cabell Robinson, a former assistant of Robert Trent Jones, who had already done work in Portugal and took care to make the most of the hills, mountain peaks and deep valleys that are a typical feature of the Madeira landscape, in order to provide golfers with an exciting and competitive round.

At the Palheiro course, there are five par-3, nine par-4 and four par-5 holes, including the final hole which leads up to the beautiful clubhouse, built in the Madeira style and offering golfers the chance to relax and enjoy the unforgettable panoramic view over the city of Funchal.

Flower Festival

Madeira’s flowers are celebrated every Spring with a festival in their honour and in 2011 this celebration will take place in May.
During the “Festa da Flor” Funchal’s main streets are invaded by a procession of allegorical floats which display a huge array of flowers, filling the air with delicate perfumes. On the eve of the flower procession thousands of children gather in the Praça do Município where they lay flowers to build what is known as the “Wall of Hope”.
Apart from these events there are also other initiatives including the creation of flower carpets, the Flower Exhibition in Largo da Restauração, performances by folk groups, classical music concerts and a wide selection of entertainment.

Madeira Island  Events Calender

A charity golf tournament in aid of victims of the recent floods in Madeira was held at the Palheiro Golf course on 6 March 2010.

The event was organised by the Palheiro Estate holding company, Palheiro Estate SGPS SA, with all proceeds going to the Cruz Vermelha (Red Cross).
The tournament was held in good weather and was very well supported, with approximately 100 players taking part. The format for the golf was Texas Scramble, with players in teams of two.

The winning team were Jonathan Fletcher & Michael Blandy, with 61 net; followed by John Holt & Peter Jacques, 66 net; and Peter Booth & Philippe Moreau, also with 66 net.

The prize for the “longest drive” was won by Jonathan Fletcher, with Rubina Laranja winning the “closest to the hole” competition.
After the tournament, the players assembled in the Clubhouse for a buffet lunch, followed by the prize giving ceremony. The prizes were given out by Patrícia Rodrigues of Palheiro Golf and Edgar Rodrigues, the Palheiro Golf Professional.
The original announcement of the charity event had brought a surge of support from all those associated with the Palheiro Estate – both companies and private individuals. This support not only took the form of turning up on the day to be part of the event, but also the donation of a large number of tombola prizes and items to be auctioned. The items donated included works of art; a cruise; various holidays – an array of valuables which gave an indication of the degree of support this worthwhile cause has attracted.

The “Palheiro Estate for Madeira” event ended with the announcement that approximately €9000 had been raised, all of which is destined to help the victims of the flooding which struck the island on 20 February 2010.

The “Palheiro Estate for Madeira” appeal continues until the end of March, at which time all funds collected will be handed over to Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa da Madeira.

The MY Balancal featured in the prestigious Financial Times’ How to Spend It magazine, after a visit by correspondent Sebastian Hope. Sebastian spent two days fishing in Madeira, and was unfortunately one of the few unlucky ones in that he just missed out on catching a marlin. Very unlucky in fact, as the next day the biggest fish of the season was caught on MY Balancal – a whopper at more than 1000 lbs.

The first New Year’s Eve party at Palheiro Village went with a swing.  The weather cleared that evening showing Funchal and surrounding hills glittering in their finery.

Palheiro Village owners and rental guests joined in the fun at the Forum hosted by Ricardo and Amr where there was champagne and music.  The grand finale was of course the wonderful firework display at midnight.

Palheiro golf recently started its ‘golf for girls’ school which was well attended.  This takes place every Saturday.

Lessons are from 11h to 12h, for girls aged 6 to 18.
Lessons cost is €3 per person, and will cover Putting, short and long game, as well as some of the basic rules of golf.
The price includes use of all equipment necessary.
