IX Sixteenth Century Market

Machico hosts the 9th edition of the 16th-century Market, an event that evokes the historical period of the discovery of the island, which has gained a prominent cultural status.

Organized by the Municipal Council of Machico and in partnership with the Elementary and Secondary Schools of Machico, this initiative takes place in Machico´s downtown at Largo da Praça, in Alameda Dr. José António de Almada, and oers a number of cultural and musical activities.

XXXV Madeira Music Festival

Funchal hosts the 35th edition the Madeira Music Festival, an event that takes place in some of the most prestigious and notable places in the city of Funchal, namely in the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre, in the as well as in the Casa das Mudas Art Centre in Calheta.

This cultural initiative is integrated in the celebrations of the Atlantic Festival program and includes a series of high-quality musical performances by Portuguese and international artists, including the ballet dance company “Quorum Ballet” (Portugal), the group “La Venexiana and Claudio Cavina”(Italy), the Vocal Ensemble “Amarcord” (Germany) and the band “La Petite Bande” (Belgium), among others.

Atlantic Festival 2014 Edition

The Atlantic Festival, an event that marks the beginning of the summer season in Madeira, will this year integrate a diverse set of initiatives spread throughout the month of June, most importantly the pyromusical shows; the Madeira Music Festival and the Regional Arts Week.

The pyromusical shows will be held on four consecutive Saturdays of the month of June, at 10:30pm at the pier outside the Pontinha, with wonderful and exciting performances, lasting about 20 minutes each, which combine fireworks and music in a unique experience for tourists and residents.
The four pyromusical shows will place in competition companies that will dispute a trophy attributed by public vote through internet, and tombola’s located in strategic venues of Funchal city centre (City Pier – day of the show, Dolce Vita, Marina Shopping, Madeira Tourism Board).

Festival de Arte Camachense

A típica freguesia da Camacha acolhe a 25.ª edição do Festival de Arte Camachense, designado por “Art Camacha 2013”, um festival inteiramente dedicado às tradições locais.

Organizado pela Casa do Povo da Camacha, esta edição propõe uma grande variedade de atividades culturais, artesanais e musicais, contando com a participação de diversas grupos folclóricos regionais, nacionais e internacionais.
Quanto às atividades artesanais, além das exposições temáticas de vimes e de bordados no edifício da Casa do Povo da Camacha, será organizada uma Feira de Artesanato e um Atelier de Bordado Madeira.

Kunstfestival ‘Festival de Arte Camachense
Von 9. bis 13. August

Im August findet in der ursprünglichen Gemeinde Camacha ein Kunstfestival „Art Camacha 2013″ statt, das ausschließlich den lokalen Traditionen gewidmet ist.
Die vom Gemeindehaus Camacha organisierte 25. Ausgabe des Festivals bietet ein umfangreiches Programmangebot aus Kultur, Kunsthandwerk und Musik.

Teil der diesjährigen Veranstaltung ist außerdem eine internationale Folkloreschau, an der verschiedene Gruppen aus dem In- und Ausland und der Region teilnehmen.
Das Kunsthandwerk präsentiert sich auf einer eigenen Messe sowie über ein Atelier mit typischen Stickereien der Madeira-Inseln.

Camachense Art Festival
9th to 13th August

In August, the picturesque village of Camacha hosts another Art Festival, entitled “Art Camacha 2013”, a festival wholly devoted to local traditions.
Organised by Camacha Community Centre, the 25th edition of the Festival features a wide variety of cultural, craft and musical activities.

The festival will integrate an international folk dancing gala session that will join local, national and international folk dancing groups.
For those interested in handicrafts, there will also be a Crafts Fair and a Madeiran Embroidery Workshop.

34th Madeira Music Festival – Funchal

Some of the most emblematic buildings of Funchal city centre, such as the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre and the Colégio Church, will host the Madeira Music Festival 2013.Part of the Atlantic Festival programme, this music festival highlights several top quality musical performances executed by Portuguese and foreign artists.The 34th edition will gather several national and international renowned artists, such as the Paulo Ribeiro Company, Sigiswald Kuijen, the Trio Chausson and Eldar Nebolsin amongst others.
Organized and supervised by the Regional Secretariat for Culture, Tourism and Transports (SRT), through the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs (DRAC), the event sets the difference for the singular excellence of its classical music concerts and the rich heritage of Madeira Islands.

Popular Marches  – Funchal
June 12th, 13th and 23rd
The month of June celebrates the festivities in honour of the popular saints, beginning with Santo António (Saint Anthony), commemorated with a particular interest by the local parishioners.On June 23rd, other municipal parishes of Funchal, like São Pedro and São João, also organizes popular marches along Rua das Pretas, Rua da Carreira and Rua de São João streets, a very lively celebration typical of the popular saint’s festive evenings.

Cherry Festival -  Jardim da Serra

The rural village of Jardim da Serra, located in the upper part of Câmara de Lobos, hosts the Cherry Festival, a popular event that promotes the local tradition of this parish. This festivity offers a wide range of sports and leisure activities that culminate with an ethnographic parade in a tribute to the harvesting of this delicious fruit.

Feast of St John  – Porto Santo
June, 20th to 24th
The Feast of St. John is one of the main and most famous popular attractions of Porto Santo Island, standing out for its popular saint’s march integrating several groups dressed appropriately for the occasion and parading through the main streets of the city centre to the sound of popular music, crackling bonfires and sweet basil scent in the air. At the same time, numerous sport and cultural activities take place, ranging from golf and tennis tournaments, gastronomic displays to musical entertainment.

Feast of St. John’s Altars  - Funchal
June, 21st to 29th
This popular festivity is deeply lived and preserved in Madeira cultural traditions.Some streets and squares of Funchal downtown (Rua da Figueira Preta, Rua da Conceição, Travessa dos Reis and Largo do Carmo) are beautifully decorated in an atmosphere characteristic of the islands religious festivities. This occasion also provides the opportunity of experiencing a social gathering in which both locals and tourists can taste some of the regional delicacies while enjoying a very lively musical ambiance.

Feast of St. Peter  - Ribeira Brava
June, 28th and 29th
The municipality of Ribeira Brava, located to the west of Madeira Island, hosts the popular saints’ marches in honour of Saint Peter.This event of popular roots is characterised by an ambiance typical of the religious festivities where food and beverage stalls can be found.These festivities culminate at midnight with a fireworks display, filling up the skies of the village with light and colour.

58th Agriculture Fair  - Santa, Porto Moniz
June, 28th to 30th
Organised for the first time in 1955, this agricultural fair is promoted to encourage the development of the animal breeding sector in the island, displaying livestock and objects associated to the farming activity.This festival also presents outdoor stands that offer local gastronomic delicacies and beverages in a setting very similar to a religious popular feast.
